Mammillaria is one of the largest cactus genera of the Cactaceae family, containing over 350 recognized species and varieties.
Its type species was first described by Carolus Linnaeus as Cactus mammillaris in 1753, a name derived from the Latin mammilla = tuber, in reference to the tubers that are one of the characteristics of the genus.
Most are native to Mexico, the southern United States, the Antilles and the coast of Venezuela
